Contraluz Opal For Sale
Contraluz opal is often one of the first terms new opal buyers encounter when learning about opals. Similar to the harlequin pattern, it is a term frequently discussed among opal enthusiasts. In Spanish, "contra luz" means "against the light." This type of opal is renowned for its unique diffracted play of colors, which sets it apart from other valuable opals. It is a glass-like opal, allowing light to pass through the stone.
Contraluz opal is known as the "rainbow within the opal" when backlit. Only a small percentage of opals exhibit this effect. Mostly originating from Mexico, Contraluz opals are celebrated worldwide for their fiery colors and stunning beauty. While some Ethiopian and Australian opals have been classified as Contraluz, it is extremely rare. Finding this type of opal in other countries is uncommon, but the most famous specimen was discovered in Oregon, USA. This opal, known as the Nebula, was described as a captured universe or hologram, more than just a stone.
The Butte Opal Mine in Oregon has produced some beautiful specimens, further solidifying its reputation.
