Verified Sellers Listing Guide

Listing Guide For Verified Sellers

All Verified Sellers must adhere to the Listing Guide when submitting items for sale on Opal Auctions. We encourage you to read our Listing An Item - What You Need To Know help article to fully understand what information must be included in your listing.

The following website specific rules have been introduced to uphold the high standard of products being sold.

Many of the rules below have come about due to the subjectiveness of certain terms in the Opal industry. These rules are in place to ensure our customers receive a consistent and accurate product.

Taking photos of Opals is very complex since the Opal itself interacts with the light to create colors. However, the main aim of the images is to correctly depict the Opal that is for sale.

Image & Video Rules Specific To Opal Auctions

  • All listings must have at least two photos from different angles or one photo and one video of the item.

  • All listings must have a photo or a video with a hand (without glove). This gives the customer a fair idea of what the stone will look like in real life since there is a skin tone to compare against.

  • The main picture must be a photo of the item

  • The photos must be of the actual item being sold. Generic, stock or bulk/multi list photos are not acceptable.

  • Images must provide an accurate representation of the item and not be over enhanced.

  • The photos of the item must be yours, not from another person or website.

Rules Specific To Opal Auctions

  • Harlequin - Seek the approval of the Opal Sheriff before using this term on an Opal

  • Opal listed in “No Reserve Opal Online Auctions” must be over 1ct in total.

  • Smoked Opal - Treatment must be declared in the title, the description field and system fields if applicable. These stones should not be called "Natural" in the product title.

  • Ethiopian Opal - If the base color of the Ethiopian has a brown hue, even if it is a small amount, it is to be called Dark Ethiopian Opal, not Black Ethiopian Opal.

  • Ethiopian Opal - All listings of Ethiopian Opal Rough or Specimens must include at least the following photos in addition to photos showing the item wet:

  • 1 image of the dry Opal Rough / Specimen in your bare hand

    • 1 image of the dry Opal Rough / Specimen with light behind it to show cracks / inclusions.

Dry Photo = Rough / Specimen has been out of water for 24 hours or more.

  • Ethiopian Opal - All listings of Ethiopian Opal Rough or Specimens must have a description on each photo, either‘ Image Taken Wet’ or ‘Image Taken Dry’.

Terms that need the Sheriff's Approval

  • Museum Grade / Quality

  • Investment Grade / Quality

  • Collectors Grade / Quality

If there are any questions about the listing guide specifics above, please do not hesitate to contact the Sheriff.
