Opal Art

This Lost Art Of Opal Art - Unique Carvings Made From OpalThere is a type of design work known as opal art, which is a very intricate craft that is only performed by those who are master craftsman. The art of gemstone carving is an art that has been perfected in Asia way back to thousands of years ago. In Asian, craftsman made artwork out of jade and agate. This trade was also completed in Europe during the ancient times, where they would carve cameos into these gemstones.

Opal Art Is A Lost Art

For the most part, these days this is a lost art. There are not a lot of people who are able carve gemstones anymore and those master crafters in areas like China charge a lot of money for this type of work to capitalize on the fact that not many can complete this work anymore. They can charge up to ten times for this type of work than the average worker. Now, most of these carvings are done by machines. Stones like jade and agate are able to be carved by machines. However, the problem is that you cannot use the machines to carve art out of opals. Since every single opal is a unique stone, there needs to be more care taken during this process. You need to hand carve them into the shape of the rough opals. Boulder opals also need to be carved out by hand using a drill type of equipment.

Type Of Opal Art

When it comes to opal art, this is a craft with a lot of variety to it. This can be as simple as a craft just adding a crystal opal as a type of inlay for a potch ironstone or just carving the opal into the shape of more traditional designs like chariot warriors. For the most part, opal art does include some black potch that has a little bit of color that gets carved into shark’s teeth or dinosaur teeth. Among the popular items is animal carvings. These are popular when they are created into 3D designs where the animal is able to be viewed from all angles. These incredibly popular animal carvings are highly sought after by collectors.

Another intricate design is the Indian head design. This is a design that gets carved into a boulder opal and since it is such a unique design, there are very different works. There are Aboriginal designs that are unique to the people of Australia. When you look at the Berta’s Opal Collection, there are quite a lot of gorgeous Aboriginal designs made from opals. Each of these designs are made to represent a story that has been passed along through the generations.
