Kalmuck Agate is also well known as the Opal from Russia.
One of the famous experts on Opals according to author Allan W. Eckert, said
the term “cacholong” was from Russia which actually means “beautiful Stone”.
This is usually made of porcelain with milky-to-creamy tones common opal range features with soft and stoneware surface.
Along the Caspian sea from the Russian Federation this opal usually can be found with its yellow and red color, also in striped form.
This unique quality Cacholong opal is widely sought after for its uniqueness, designers from Italy and Germany have been designing jewellery for this stone forover 5 years now.
These designers from Italy & Germany have made eye catching and one off pieces.
In fact Jon King who is the Tiffany’s Senior Vice President had highly recommended using this Russian Opal for Tiffany’s jewellery collection. Teaming up withTiffany the famous architectFrank Gehry has designed a range of pendant using pink opal.
On the hardness scale (Moh’s scale) Cacholong Opals are rated from 5-6 toughness scale.
Cacholong opals are not easily accessible as they are not activelymined.
Currently Tiffany’s depend on Russia for their source of cacholong opals. Some cacholong opals may also come from Bulgaria.
Please note that Cacholong opals are permeable. Gehry’s use of cacholong opal should hopefully increase awareness of beautiful stone.
