In December 1998, after 7 hours driving from Sydney, I met Mr. Paul Sedawie in Lighting Ridge. The place looked so normal has no difference with all the other country towns. As a tourist guider located in Sydney and Gold Coast, I interested to find out what Opal really was since more and more Chinese tourist interested it. So I took a holiday and went there. This was a life change trip. I couldn’t help to fall in love with it instantly when I saw those gemstones on the field. There were very few miners still in town: even you stayed in the room, it’s still 50 degrees hot and much more if under sunshine. Your neck and chews kept sweat and sweat kept dropping all day long, you only had 30 second jump into the shall that water out of cold water pipe otherwise those water from the tank would get you burnt. That‘s how my opal business got started in the end of 1998. I loved it, It’s so exciting and I stayed there from then on learned how to cut and how to identity and buying. I almost put everything I had into this gem stone of 21st century. On April 2004, we introduced Lighting Ridge black opal to the Shanghai market, and as the very first one directly from mine field, the show run by Paul and me attracted anomies attention in the local market. There were many misunderstanding about Opal during that time, even in the Chinese gem text book there were very few information for the opal. After came back from China, I spent few months to make researches and collected information and pictures etc at NSW home. That wasn’t easy. But compared what I had to overcome the problems to publish this book in China it’s nothing!! For example, I had to go Mongolia to get a publishing right by friends help otherwise I had to wait another year and still had to pay them 28 thousand Yuan only get serious number(CIP number ) …And finally it’s done. Since it has no political sensitivity so it passed and allowed it been printed: Opal—the guide for operation purpose. Then I learned it was the very first Opal book published in China. It was year 2004.During the show in these year, I found those Yowah and Koriot Opals should deserve better position in the market, especially when I have seen Eddy and David’s stock. Because the price just right for the oversea’s market. I went back to China since 2005 and start opal business thereIn 2006, Wayne came to ShangHai and we run the opal show there, it’s really interesting show and we found many things we both agreed with. Then I opened an Opal web-site in China from then on and gained a lot of contactors there. For all these years, I kept visiting Opal field 2-3 times each year in Queensland and NSW. attended many opal shows as possible, Since my partner run the shop and web site in Shanghai . I could come back to start something new in Australia.
