Lorikeet Lucky Dip

This auction lot is for one randomly picked a bag of rough opal from the Lorikeet Lucky Dip container.

Now it is very important that you understand that there are all different grades of opal in the container and you could draw any one of the following:

The container consists of:

The top three prizes were top opals in our shop and they have now been renumbered and are now in the safe under new numbers but if you want to look at them they were:

3 Grand Prize bags

1. 28904

https://www.opalauctions.com/auctions/1-bonanza-coober-pedy-gamble-rough-28904-93287

2. 47175

https://www.opalauctions.com/auctions/1-coober-pedy-field-company-gamble-rough-1193711

3. 31450

https://www.opalauctions.com/auctions/1-nnopaltops-coober-pedy-gamble-rough-31450-996425

Also in the container are:

10 Grade #1 Bags - 1 nice piece or average 13 ct - $138 USD NR Average

17 Grade #2 Bags -  1 nice pice or average 24 ct - $87 USD NR Average

25 Grade #3 Bags - 1 nice piece or  average 32 ct - $100 USD NR Average

139 Grade #5 Bags - 1 piece 5 ct - 100 ct (average 23 ct) - $24 NR USD Average

86 Grade #7 Bags - 70 ct - $70USD NR Average

199 Grade #8 Bags 70 ct - $17 USD NR Average

All of this material is from Coober Pedy and like I said you could get any one of these bags from your draw. So it could be a grade one bag, it could be a grand prize bag, it might be a grade eight bag, and that is the gamble you are taking and that is what a Lucky Dip is.

Note: I have transcribed everything said in this video below.  If you have trouble understanding us please put the below into the translator. If you want to bid on this auction it is very important that you understand exactly what I am saying.  Please message me if you have any questions before bidding.

Grace mixed all 479 lots altogether. I printed 479 bag stickers. Then I randomly pulled bags from the pile, applied a sticker, and then stacked in a rack in one of our safes. The bag you get will correspond to the Unique Stock Keeping Unit that is both printed on the bag and posted in its corresponding auction (the field labelled "SKU").

So many of you guys over the years have expressed to me that you’d love the opportunity to cut some high dollar opal but you don't think you would ever be able to afford any.  We have set this game up specifically so some of you at least will have the chance to do just that.

There are a few Lorikeet parcels in our No Reserve section but most of them are available in our buy it now section. To see them all type "Lorikeet,”  into the opal auction search bar.

All of the opals that you see here in the background are the grade one, two, and three bags of the Lorikeet lucky dip, but it is important to understand that you might not get one of these bags, it is a lucky dip for any of the bags in the container.

Just to cover a few housekeeping items for these auctions:

Number One, we are more than happy to combine shipping with any of these auctions with the wins that you get from our store “53Frogs”  So after you have done your winning if you want to add one or two or three or more of these auctions go ahead and do it and then check out and the shipping will automatically be combined.

Number two, just like you can’t return a scratch-off lottery ticket once you have done the scratching, once you get these items and open them up and see what you have gotten from the lucky dip gamble, they can not be returned.

Number three, there will only ever be one Lorikete Lucky Dip auction and there will only ever be four hundred and seventy-nine lots for that auction. If you guys like this format we will call future Lucky Dip auctions by different names.

Thank you all for your great feedback on our last Lucky dip auction. This is still very much an experiment to bring you all something fun and different so if you have any ideas about how we can make it more fun or more interesting just message me up in the message box and we’ll have a think about it.

Good Luck and Happy Cutting.

Frequency Asked Questions

1. It says 1ct, are all of the bags 1ct?

No, not 1ct.  All of the grading is as per my standard grading practice.  I had to put something in that field and since all of the bags are different and keen eyes who are accustomed to my grading could use that information to "sniff" out the winners, I had to homogenise this part of the listings.

Generally speaking, the weights are listed above.

2. How does the Randomising happen?

Please see video

3. How many Luck Dip auctions can I buy?

As many as you like

4. How many bags of each grade are there?

Please see the above breakdown.  This is also included in the introduction video.

  1. Where are all of the Lucky Dip auctions?

I have to manually load them all up to Opal Auctions.  This process takes many hours so if you start to hunt them down right after I have loaded the first one you won’t find any.  Just wait a few hours and they will all be there.

6. Can I put auctions in my cart and leave them there?

If you just put something in your cart, anybody else can do the same with that item and the first person to check out gets the item.  There are two exceptions.  If you send an offer and it is accepted, then the item goes in your cart and nobody can take it.  Also, if you win an auction that has a timer on it by having the largest bid when the timer hits zero, the auction goes in your cart and nobody can take it.

7. Why are there different prices on some of the Buy It Now lots, are they all the same?

They are all the same, one random bag from the lucky dip container, but there are some different early bird prices.

8. What happened to the winners from the first lucky dip?

You can see a lot of their feedback on their wins in our customer feedback section.   Some are still in the post so I dont want to deprive anyone of their surprises by saying too much here.

9. Can you give a guide to the approximate value of each of the possible wins?

I’ve done this for you above in the container breakdown.  The amounts quoted are calculated based on Coober Pedy only material from the same mine as the Lorikeet Lucky dip material.   The averages are for just this year and were calculated across five hundred Live No Reserve Auctions.

NOTICE: OUR OPAL AUCTIONS SHOP "53FROGS" RUNS HUNDREDS OF NO RESERVE AUCTIONS EVERY WEEK, BUT THEY ARE SPREAD ACROSS OPAL AUCTIONS IN MANY DIFFERENT CATEGORIES. No Colour Potch- Not Appropriate for cutting cabs

Opal rough from Coober Pedy is notoriously hard to read and even harder to cut. Years ago, as a young cutter, I wanted to learn how to work with this material but found it difficult to find smaller parcels that I could afford that weren't just a bunch of potch. This material comes from a commercial parcel that I have broken up into smaller lots and have posted them here for you. We spend a lot of time and effort grading this material, so you can pick the opal rough that is most appropriate for your skill level and budget. Please, Please don't buy cheap beginners rough from us and then give us negative feedback because you haven't cut precious zillion-dollar gems. It doesn't work that way. I've cut tens of thousands of LR opals, and although I won't get it right every time, I think my grading is pretty accurate. I take the time to do this so that your cutting experience will be fun and allow you to progress in difficulty, and reward you over time without making some of the very costly beginners' mistakes.

Here is a brief description of the criteria we use when grading the opal rough:

#9 "Craft Material" is not opal that is appropriate for cutting cabochons. This rough is best for Chipping and putting into floating pendants, craftwork etc. If you want some cheap material to set into your concrete front yard cats eyes or have a mosaic in the bathroom, you want to spice up; this might work for you :)

#8 "Beginners Cutting Rough" is excellent for beginners to get used to cutting this material without worrying about destroying great opals. It is a mix of Nobby and Seam opal. It will cut lots of picture stones and low-value opals. You'll learn to cut open nobbies, chase colour bars, deal with sand and get a general understanding of what it feels like to cut opals. Great material for practising cutting lovely shapes and bringing that talent sharp before attacking more expensive colour. We sort out everything with no colour in it, so 97% of this material shows colour, and 3% will be a Nobby opal that may or may not have colour inside.

#7 "Mid Grade Gamble Rough" is excellent to hone your skills and learn to read trickier opals. This material is full of thin colour bars, colour bars that run diagonally through rough, wavy colour bars, tricky sand spots, and blind stones where I can see that there is colour in the rough but have no idea how deep it goes. Very challenging, sometimes very rewarding rough. Sometimes you cry.

#6 "Intermediate Easy Cutters"- exactly that, with an intermediate skill level, you should be able to cut lovely medium brightness sellable opals from this material. They are generally clean, and you should have a pretty good idea about the kind and size of finished opals you will cut from watching the videos.

#5 "Large Single Gamble Pieces" is pretty much what it says on the tin. These can range from beginners to expert level. Cutting big stones like this is a very different skill from cutting small "pointers" or standard 1ct-3ct opals. These are great fun to cut and can be very rewarding if you get lucky.

#4 "Very Thin/Carving" Most of this material is super thin and appropriate for making doublets.

#3 "Gamble Expert Cutters" look very bright/colourful and show good promise, but I can't see that they will cut a clean opal. The best blue/green material I find in the parcel also goes into this bucket.

#2 "Expert Cutters Clean" will generally give you precious bright sellable stones. They appear very clear to the eye. It looks like the colour bar covers most of the stone.

#1 "Top Grade" this material represents only a small fraction of our inventory. It is the very best material we find. Red on Black, Deep pinks, lovely patterns, and strong black opals all end up in this category. If I yell, "WOW, I want to cut this one!" it goes in this tiny dish.

All opal cutting is a gamble, and classifying is just my opinion based on my opal cutting journey and current skill level.

When you get your rough please look it over carefully, both wet and dry.
