Ocean jasper is one of the most collectable stones in recent times.. This stones colors, patterns and shapes amaze and boggle the mind. It is one of natures masterpieces.

This rock is found along the northwest coast of Madagascar. The deposit is a rhyolite flow that has completely silicified. The eyes or orbs come in a amazing array of colors. Color combinations are often striking and difficult to believe they are natural. Druzy and crystal pockets are common.

The vibrant colors visible in Ocean Jasper are caused by many different minerals.

Red is caused by iron or hematite, light yellow or gray is caused by clay and brown or deep yellow is from goethite. Sometimes a dazzling display of sparkling tiny crystals occurs upon the surface. These little gems, known as druze, are the result of clear or white quartz formations.  Many collectors seek specimens of Ocean Jasper with these unique crystals upon them.

This is a Ethiopian doublet that has  been well polished. This is a doublet made from natural welo crystal mounted on to ironstone backing. We have cut the crystal a bit thicker than we would on a australian doublet. This opal is hydrophane [absorbes water] so in wet weather it will look brighter.
