Honduras has hundreds of opal prospects and mines, although most high- quality opal is produced from small informal mines in the cool tropical highlands of southwestern Honduras. In particular, the Tablon mine near Erandique is based on the country’s biggest deposit where the opal occurs in large blocks of black basalt. Miners hand-chisel the boulders to extract small vertical veinlets of thin, colourful precious opal, including black-seam opals and black-matrix opals. Seam opals, varying from near paper-thin to rare specimens more than 1 cm thick, have a crystal clear, milky white, slightly blue or brownish orange colouration because they are so thin, the gems tend to be cut with the black basalt forming the back of the stone forming black-matrix opals.

Welcome to the colorful journey of Paul Sedawie, a lifelong enthusiast of opals. Paul's fascination with these gemstones began at the tender age of 14 when he acquired his first boulder rough. Entranced by their natural beauty and vibrant colors, Paul embarked on a remarkable adventure in 1989, moving to Lightning Ridge to own an opal claim. Despite the challenges of mining, the experience bestowed upon him priceless memories and a deep respect for the craft. Today, Paul's journey has evolved, transitioning from mining to curating exquisite opals from partnerships and miners worldwide. With a keen eye for quality, he meticulously oversees the cutting process, personally crafting the finest black opals. Together with his sons, Peter and Ross, Paul continues to share his passion for opals with customers globally. Ross, a graduate of the AIGS Gem School, spearheads SEO efforts, while Peter manages worldwide dispatch and opal cutting. As a testament to his dedication, Paul celebrates his 30-year milestone in the opal business in 2019, having sold over 100,000 stones and parcels through Opal Auctions. This E-book offers a glimpse into Paul's extraordinary collection, a culmination of decades spent immersed in the opal industry. With a commitment to preserving Australia's opal heritage, Paul cherishes his personal collection of opal fossils, ensuring they remain in their homeland. Why are users outbidding themselves?

When a bid is placed, this is the maximum amount a user is willing to bid for the product. Our system will then automatically bid on that users behalf, incrementally increasing the bid to maintain their position as the highest bidder, up to the specified maximum.

When there is an icon indicating 'Auto Bid,' it means our system is actively placing bids for the user based on their maximum bid. This may appear as if users are outbidding themselves, but it's simply a result of the system updating the bid to reflect the users maximum limit.

Audit

The Opal Sheriff program allows our members to request an audit on any product, which is completed by an independent Gemologist who assesses the accuracy of the item description and pictures.
