"Ocean" Tanzanite is the name given to a lighter green type of Zoisite.

Many people believe - incorrectly - that if you heated these blue green stones they would become totally blue. The reality is that their natural green tint comes from a larger than usual amount of chemical chromium and very little vanadium ( the chemical responsible for Tanzanite's famous blue violet hues )  and heating wouldn't change a thing.

Tanzanite is an extraordinary gemstone. It occurs in only one place worldwide -Tanzair africa. Its blue, surrounded by a fine hint of purple, is a wonderful colour. It is also found in a varitey of colours uncluding green and the rare pink colour. Thanks to its unusual aura and the help of the New York jeweller's Tiffany, it has rapidly become one of the most coveted gemstones in the world.

Tanzanite is a blue variety of the gemstone zoisite. It consists of calcium aluminium silicate and is not particularly hard, having a value of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. For that reason, it should always be worn carefully and never placed in an ultrasonic bath for cleaning or brought into contact with acids.

The deep blue of the tanzanite is fantastic, and runs from ultramarine blue to light violet-blue. The most coveted colour is a blue surrounded by a delicate hint of purple, which has a particularly wonderful effect in sizes of over 10 carats. The well developed polychromaticity of the tanzanite is typical: depending on the angle from which you look at it, the stone may appear blue, purple or brownish-yellow. Having said that, most raw crystals are somewhat spoiled by a brownish-yellow component, though it can be made to disappear by the cutter if he heats the stone carefully in an oven to approximately 500°. During the procedure he must pay careful attention to the moment at which the colour turns to blue. This burning is a method of treatment which is regarded as customary in the trade, but the raw stones must be as free of inclusions as possible, since otherwise fissures may occur. In fact working with tanzanite can sometimes give even the most experienced cutter a bit of a headache, the cleavage of this gemstone being very pronounced in one direction. This exclusive gemstone is cut in every imaginable shape from the classical round shape to a number of imaginative designer cuts.

Welcome to the colorful journey of Paul Sedawie, a lifelong enthusiast of opals. Paul's fascination with these gemstones began at the tender age of 14 when he acquired his first boulder rough. Entranced by their natural beauty and vibrant colors, Paul embarked on a remarkable adventure in 1989, moving to Lightning Ridge to own an opal claim. Despite the challenges of mining, the experience bestowed upon him priceless memories and a deep respect for the craft. Today, Paul's journey has evolved, transitioning from mining to curating exquisite opals from partnerships and miners worldwide. With a keen eye for quality, he meticulously oversees the cutting process, personally crafting the finest black opals. Together with his sons, Peter and Ross, Paul continues to share his passion for opals with customers globally. Ross, a graduate of the AIGS Gem School, spearheads SEO efforts, while Peter manages worldwide dispatch and opal cutting. Why are users outbidding themselves?

When a bid is placed, this is the maximum amount a user is willing to bid for the product. Our system will then automatically bid on that users behalf, incrementally increasing the bid to maintain their position as the highest bidder, up to the specified maximum.

When there is an icon indicating 'Auto Bid,' it means our system is actively placing bids for the user based on their maximum bid. This may appear as if users are outbidding themselves, but it's simply a result of the system updating the bid to reflect the users maximum limit.

Audit

The Opal Sheriff program allows our members to request an audit on any product, which is completed by an independent Gemologist who assesses the accuracy of the item description and pictures.
